Once upon a time… and they lived happily ever after is the beginning and the ending of many books, that children listened to and read. Children never tire of being fascinated by the cleverness of their favorite book’s characters, and the unpredictable situations that they could extricate themselves from. By these books being read and enjoyed over so many years they have become classics that children enjoy today. You may have said, “I would like to write children books.” That is certainly a desire that could happen for you if you follow a few helpful hints.

4 Tips To Write Children Books

1. Know the age group that you want to write for. Example: You would write differently for a preschooler ages (3-5) than for an older child whose vocabulary, attention span, and interest, is different.

2. If you want to write children books you must also do some research. You should visit your library and take note of the children books that are available. Ask your librarian about the most popular titles for your age group of interest. Take some of the books home to read at leisure. Ask yourself questions about the book. What did the author do that made this book beloved among children? What did the author not do? Look at the copyright page. How many years has the book been in print? Has the author written other books? Questions like these will give you the incentive that you need to write children books.

3. You may now want to begin to write your children’s book. Keep a few things in mind that you may have noticed in your research. Books for young children should not be too wordy; your book should be able to be read in one sitting. Children do not like to wait on an ending when their interest is peaked.

4. After you have a finished manuscript go to at least three preschools and ask if you could visit their circle/story time to read to the children. Watch to see if the book holds their interest. Are they fidgety and inattentive? Are they quiet and listening to every word? Can they answer questions on what happens in the story? Which character did they like best? Three groups will not give you a gauge on every child, but it will give you information on what you did that was good, or what you need to correct and improve on.

These few tips on how to write children books should get you started on what you may have wanted to do for a long time. Years and generations from now a young child from a far away place will pick YOUR book up, and say words that are as familiar as once upon a time… and they lived happily ever after.
